- The flash memory model is slimmer at 10.4mm (0.4") and lighter at 182gm (6.4oz) than the hard disk drive model, which is 20.0mm (0.8") thick and 286gm (10.1oz) heavy

- Standard Micro USB Cable (used to transfer files and charge device). Cable is NOT proprietary. It is standard usb to micro usb. Many people have confirmed this and are using standard cell phone chargers for the A5A.

Hardware of the Archos 5A
Storage
- 8GB - 32GB with flash memory and 160GB - 500GB with 2.5" hard disk drive (both use the ext3 file-system)
- The flash memory version has a slot to accept Micro SD cards for flexible, removable storage. This includes compatibility with high capacity (i.e., SDHC) models (up to 32GB). Note that the cards go into the slot with the contacts facing up and the printed side of the card facing down.

Docks
- Battery dock - output A/V (S-Video or composite); has a battery that can be charged to extend run time of your Archos (when attached), essentially doubling run time. A charged battery dock can charge the Archos itself in about 2 hours. Also includes USB 2.0 host. Allows you to charge the device with an AC power supply (worldwide capable, with 3 interchangeable plug types).
- Mini dock - output A/V (S-Video or composite). Same functions as the battery dock, minus the battery. Also includes USB 2.0 host. Allows you to charge the device with an AC power supply (worldwide capable, with 3 interchangeable plug types).
- HDMI Mini dock - output A/V (HDMI). Also includes USB 2.0 host. Allows you to charge the device with an AC power supply (worldwide capable, with 3 interchangeable plug types). Has not yet been made available for purchase (March 2010).
DVR Station and Snap-on
- DVR station (Archos #501429) - Allows you to record media on your Archos. Comes with a remote control. Has multiple outputs including HDMI, SPDIF, and the usual video outputs. Also includes USB 2.0 host. Allows you to charge the device with an AC power supply (worldwide capable, with 3 interchangeable plug types).
- DVR Snap-on (Archos #501196) - Allows you to record media on your Archos; power supply is not included. USB host is not present. Allows you to charge the device with an AC power supply (worldwide capable, with 3 interchangeable plug types). Other photos here.
Mount
- Archos Car Mount with FM Transmitter (Archos #501426) - Using suction cup mounting, this mount fits the Archos 5A and makes it easier to enjoy GPS functionality and FM radio. Transmitter cable plugs into cigarette light and charges device.

Software of the Archos 5A
Audio codec support
The Archos Media Center (AMC) is capable of decoding the following codecs:
- AAC (except protected content) - available as a free plugin
- AAC+ stereo audio files
- with paid plugin: AC3 stereo audio and 5.1 sound files (via SPDIF output of DVR Station)
- Note: An image in the folder of your music files named Folder.jpg will ensure that the Archos Media Center (AMC) software displays your album art. Android's music app, on the other hand, wants album art to be embedded into the music file.
